how to reformat hard drive running xp?

I would like to reformat my hard drive due to possible virus. What are the instructions I need in dos prompt, I've tried FORMAT C: but it keeps saying I have a volume running and therefore cannot reformat...plz help, just want to start with a freshly cleaned drive...thx

try fdisk first delete and recreate your disk partition.

Why not try Panda Anti Virus Titanium first. It's a fully functional piece of shareware (30 day usage) and works very nicely with XP thankyou. If it finds anything you're laughing if not....... XP seems to take a bit of settling so it could be many other things.....don't be quite so hasty!

Or try http://housecall.antivirus.com/ it's free webbase Virus Checker. it doens't clean but it will tell you if you have anything.
Get or make a Bootable Floppy disk. And use format and fdisk from the floppy in command. er make sure floppy has those command files on it.

Try format c: /x The /x switch will force the volume to dismount before attempting to format it...
