i had windows xp with two partition
drive d is NTFS and it had some encrypted
files
recently i format my the c drive and installed windows xp again
after that i couldn't open my encrypted files on the drive d
i did not import any key or anything to recover those files
how do i recover those files please help me

As far as I know there is no free publicly available method or utility that will allow recovery of encrypted files. If there were then there would be no point to encryption. I'm sure that several government agencies(of whatever nation you belong to) could do it but are you going to ask them?

I had this problem too.
I had some Word files in my documents which I password protected and then encrypted with XPPro.
I copies these encrypted files to a spare drive as backup.
Reinstalled XPPro...copied the files from backup to my documents ...and they are now unreadable.
It seems the 'key' is with the original XP install somewhere and reinstalling XP provides a different 'key'.
So really is there any point in encrypting the files in the first place unless you are able to have the 'key' and store it ...say on a floppy? even a PIN no would be useful!

I don't know for certain but I've read somewhere that the necessary info is contained in what's called the "sam" file. Possibly keeping a backup of that would enable it to be reinserted after a format/reinstal. Maybe someone more knowlegable can confirm.
