how to put pictures from computer to a reader

Specs: Windows XP
I want to get rid of old computer but have pitures I want to keep.. I have a box approx 3x5 which I thought was called a reader that you put into USB port. I don't know how to do this.

I think the device you have needs one more part. It might need a Compact Flash memory card or a Secure Digital or even that stupid Sony memory stick.

Are there slots in it that seems to suggest this?

I guess you don't have a "burner"? (cd or dvd, either will work).
Most ISP's offer some disk space for your homepage or etc... You might be able to upload the pics there then download them onto the new machine using ftp. Otherwise, google the "reader" by name/model number and see if you can find some manuals or instructions or advice. jefro is probably correct: the reader must have some device to write to unless it contains a hard drive or other internal mass-storage. Look for "ports" that will accept sticks etc. Or, just buy a usb stick and put them onto it (or them, depending on volume).

You could also create a Dropbox or Google Email account and copy your pictures the their site, then copy them back to your new computer. This would also give you a secure copy of your pictures in case your hard drive ever crashed.

if you wish advice about a piece of equipment you need to post things like make and model number. Saying 'reader' makes it anyones guess.
