I have a DVD rom on my computer and I thought it was all I needed to play movies on it. Looks like I need a program to do so. Where can I get one for free?

Usually you would start with the cd disks that came with the system or the dvd drive. If this device came with the system I would expect the software to be preloaded. Otherwise do a internet search.

I got the DVD player alone. What are some key word I should use for the search? DVD decoder or something like that?

Media Player Classic looks just like Windows Media Player 6.4, but has many additional features. It has a built in DVD player with real-time zoom, support for AVI subtitles, built-in MPEG2/SVCD/DVD codec.

I agree with Kurt S, Media Player Classic is the way to go...
