I have a multi boot sys and boot into XP which is installed on a slave HD#2
My configuration is as fllws:
HD1-Master:
C:(Primary) OS WinME (used occasionaly)
D:(extended) Now EMPTY (Had Win2K before but removed it)HD2-Slave:
H: Windows XP Pro (Main OS)
I: Data Files etc.Since my D: Partition is empty I'd like to move XP from HDisk2\H: to Hdisk1\D: and retain the dual boot settings. This will free HD2 which I intend to use in another computer.
How can this be done?
would appreciate all suggestionsTnx

Disconnect hard disk 2. Install XP on the empty partition. Edit the boot.ini file to remove the entry for disk 2.

1. If you have access to a third party utility like drive image, Ghost, Drive Copy or similar, then copy XP from disk2 to logical drive in disk 1. This will save you having to backup, re-install all the applications and restore data that always follows a re-install.
2. Update boot.ini file (ARC path) to point to new location of XP.
For example for XP being moved from the first partition of the second disk to the second partition of the first disk you would change:
From This:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetectTo This.
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetectHope it helps.

Thanks a lot mosaddique. I have N.Ghost and was planning to do just as you advised. The only question I have, will XP be bootable on drive D: (disk 1) since all registry entries of the ghost image will point to drive H:?? Am I wrong here?

So long as you update your boot.ini correctly, you should be fine.
Don't forget to take a backup of your boot.ini just in case. If all goes well you will not need it.
Furthermore you can set xp up on the empty partition first, amend the boot.ini to add (rather than replace) a new entry to point to this new copy of XP.
This way you can boot to either copy. Once you satisfy yourself it all works, you can edit your boot.ini and delete the old entry and remove that HDD.
