I have WinXP Home Edition on my hard drive which I burnt to a CD using Nero with the "Make Bootable CD" option, during this it asked me to enter a bootable floppy drive which I did. It created the CD ok, but when I try to boot of it it just boots into DOS and loads all the files from the floppy disk. How can I create an XP Home bootable CD?

The contents of the CD root dir are:

$OEM$
AUTORUN.INF
DOCS
I386
PRODUCT_KEY.TXT
README.HTM
SETUP.EXE
SUPPORT
VALUEADD
WIN51
WIN51IC

The contents of autoexec.bat from the bootable floppy are:

PROMPT $P$G
A:\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD0001 /M:8 /V /E

The contents of config.sys from the bootable floppy are:

DEVICE=A:\OAKCDROM.SYS /D:MSCD0001
REM DEVICE=A:\HIMEM.SYS
BUFFERS=60
FILES=60
LASTDRIVE=Z

This is the best guide I have found and worked well for me. Also shows how to slipstream service packs.

As CLK suggested, the eldergeek guide is one of the best around. However, you would have known this had you bothered to use the search function before posting your question. This question has been asked and answered hundreds of times.

Please let us know if you found someone's advice to be helpful.

nlite is a cool little program that will make a bootable CD for you out of your XP installer files. It can also slipstream service packs and hotfixes, tweak install settings, make an unattended install, and lots of other cool stuff. It basically does the same thing as what's on the the site CLK linked to but it does it automatically through a menu-driven GUI. Nice and simple :)

You need to make a single disk boot disk on a floppy first........that is the information that nero uses to make the cd bootable....you wont see those files on the cd but when you boot from the cd your computer will see them. You make a bootable floppy from the add and remove section in control panel. You can download a bootable floppy off the internet as well.....I think it is bootdisk.com. That is why Nero was asking for a floppy disk to get the boot info to make the cd bootable. Be sure and choose 1.44 emulation as well. You will notice when you boot from a Nero cd you will have two floppies.....and A and B floppy. When you boot from a Nero CD your CD drive becomes Floppy Drive A.
Good luck

PS email me if your still having problems. It can be done pretty easy using Nero.

I followed the instructions on theeldergeek website, I am trying to create the XP bootable CD on a Win2K Pro system, when I try to update the service pack to the Windows share using "C:\XP-SP2\i386\Update\Update.exe -S:C:\XP" it does nothing, the cursor shows an hourglass for 1 second and then does nothing.

Can I simply replace the i386 folder from the CD with that from the Service Pack?

The actual command I am running (from START->RUN) is:

C:\Software\Microsoft\Windows\XP\WINXPHEOEM_SP2\i386\update\update.exe -S:C:\Software\Microsoft\Windows\XP\WINXPHEOEM
