I have an acer laptop with xp professional installed. However when I set the boot order to be cd drive first and tried to reinstall windows xp pro, the blue 'Windows XP Professional Setup' screen says:
Setup did not find and hard disk drives installed in your computer...
I don't understand why this happens?

You will probably find the harddrive is SATA and your instal disk does not contain an appropriate driver. I would guess the instal disk you are using is not the one that came with the laptop.

The install disk is the one that came with the laptop. This laptop was pre-installed with Windows XP Professional. I did not do anything to the hardware.
Because this laptop was infested with some hard-to-remove spywares, I just used my own genuine installation CD to re-install XP. I pressed the 'Enter' key to 'boot from CD...'.
I also tried to use Windows Server 2003 installation CD, the same message was displayed.

Thsnks for any further comments and help

Go into BIOS to see if HDD is detected there.

Mechanical devices do have problems, and the HDD can go bad.

Harddrive manufacturers have software for download for testing HDD.

The usual reason for this error is you did not provide a hard drive controller driver.

You do this by hitting F6 when you see it in the lower left corner as install files are zipping by.

You should be able to go to the acer site, look up your model laptop and download the correct driver.

Thanks, after changing some of the settings
The windows xp professional is successfully installed and activated through the telephone call.
