How do you install ONLY the USB drivers from the XP/SP2 CD??

I did a new HDD install of XP Pro, then did the SP2 update and then added all the updates through May 2007.

None of my USB ports work! Furthermore, nothing shows up in device manager that indicates USB.

These USB ports DO work because they were working fine with the old HDD.

Any suggestions, short of reinstalling XP again, would be appreciated.

You probably need to install the MBoard chipset drivers. You don't need special drivers with WinXPsp2.

All of your USB drivers should have been loaded with the addition of SP2. I would suggest you check your BIOS first and see what the USB status is there. Check your Device manager as well and see if anything can be done from there. It should not be necessary to reload the USB drivers.

OtheHill is right.
Windows doesn't necessarily detect your USB chipsets properly until the chipset drivers are loaded, and USB 2.0 chipsets will not be detected unless you have at least SP1 updates loaded in Windows.

I installed updated mobo drivers right after I installed XP & SP2. Should I install the original drivers that came with the mobo THEN upgrade to the current VIA drivers?

Terii, you will need to be alot more specific with your suggestion. WHAT am I checking in the BIOS setup? WHAT am I looking for in the device manager and what am I to do with that?

"I installed updated mobo drivers right after I installed XP & SP2."

But in what order?
If you loaded the mboard chipset drivers before SP2 updates, many if not all chipset driver installs will not load the information about which USB 2.0 drivers to use for the controllers controllers unless at least Windows SP1 updates are already present (because the drivers are not in Windows at that point) - it usually loads the USB 1.1 drivers fine (even if you have only USB 2.0 controllers they have a USB 1.1 backward compatibility), but you will have a yellow ? beside the entry for the USB 2.0 controller(s), or enhanced USB controller(s), in Device Manager, and when you investigate that, Windows doesn't have the drivers loaded and doesn't know what drivers to use. When you load SP2 updates after that, the USB 2 drivers are built into Windows with SP2, but Windows doesn't have the information included in the chipset drivers to tell it to use them because that info was not installed when you installed the chipset drivers.

Of course, make sure your USB controllers are enabled in your bios Setup pages - usually they are by default.
If you have flashed your bios, load bios Defaults in the bios Setup in order to load the cmos part of the bios that goes with that bios version.

If the USB controllers are enabled, you can fix your problem simply by loading the Via Hyperion(4 in 1) mboard main chipset drivers again, either from the mboard CD, or get the newest version from http://www.viaarena.com - Drivers - Op system - Chipset or Platform

Arrghhh!!

Ok, I have read everyones' suggestions and implemented what I could. I downloaded the latest VIA drivers for my mobo and installed them - no change! The USB ports STILL do not work and they STILL do not appear in the device manager. I reset the BIOS to all default settings and no change. I did go into system info and found this:

VIA USB Roothub lower filter - started: no
VIA USB Host controller lower filter - started: no

How do you start them??

So, guys, at this point I am at a complete loss as to what to do. I have done all that has been suggested. More help is appreciated, because I now have no clue!

Hooray!!! It is now working. When it was said that the USB controllers are usually enabled by default, I just went into BIOS and loading all settings as fail-safe default. When that didn't work, I got aggravated enough to go back and look at each and every setting. Lo and behold, for this mobo, USB is disabled by default. It is now working. Thanks to all for the help!

But now, in the device manager I have a gazillion listings under Universal Serial Bus controllers - I have 4 USB Root Hub, 3 VIA Rev 5 or later..., and 1 VIA USB Enhanced and 1 each for the KB/mouse and printer. Should I have so many extra listings?? Could installing so many different drivers caused this? Is there a nifty program that can analyze all the drivers on my system and tell me if there are duplicate drivers or ones that aren't being used.

This gazillion problem is also happening with my graphics card. I have 2 listings for Radeon and 2 more for the same video card under "other devices" listed as 'unknown devices'.

What do you guys think? Is there a way to clean up duplicate or unused/unassigned drivers in the system?

It's good to hear you got the USB working.

Sounds normal to me.

Usually there are two mboard USB ports for each USB controller - if you have 8 ports total, including those available via connecting a wiring adapter or front usb ports to a mboard header or headers (some may not be xconnected), you probably have 4 Root hubs. The Enhanced controller is the USB 2.0 one - the 3 others are USB 1.1 ones.
If you have a USB keyboard, USB mouse, and USB connected printer, those listings are normal too.

"...I have 2 listings for Radeon and 2 more for the same video card under "other devices" listed as 'unknown devices'."

If the video is "dual head" - can support two monitors, or one monitor and TV out - there are 2 listings for the video adapter - one is primary, the other is secondary.

The unknown video listings are probably leftovers from something you did - uninstall them and they should not re-appear.
