Comment:

hi,

I re installed windows recently and the reinstall came with sp1. I've had the comp on the internet nearly 24/7 for about a week and it still has not upgraded to sp2. Auto updated are turned on and the pc has installed other windows updates for sp1. Is there anyway to get SP2 now instead of waiting? Microsoft.com says it will install from the auto updates, but its been a week with no luck.
Thanks,
Cody

If you had done a search on this forum you would have found this link to download SP2.

polizi, is the SP2 disk still available from MS? I didn't see the option to order it when I downloaded SP2 earlier this year.
I ended downloading SP2 from the, oh shoot can't remember the wording, MS IT Administration or something or another - a place you could go to download large files to install on multiple computers in a work environment.

Go to Windows Update & request a Custom scan rather than Express and it will probably offer you Service Pack 2 straight away to download.

Brim, the nice thing about having a copy of SP2 is that then you don't have to wait while it scans and downloads all of the updates and patches again -- especially when it comes to a slower internet connection such as dialup or 128k DSL (my situation!). There are times, too, when an internet connection just isn't possible; for example, when the isp is down for whatever reason or the computer you are working on doesn't have an internet connection yet (or never will).

One other great reason to have a copy of SP2 is that you'll have it....Someday MS might quit supporting all of the OSes that need SP2. There are some of us out here that like to fool around with older machines and operating systems, so having a CD with the latest patches and updates for that OS is real handy.

To AK Bessy. I too have the CD for SP2 & I would use that but I don't think it is available now from MS. Anyway, the original question was how to get the PC to update over the internet which can be accomplished by doing a "Custom" Windows Update scan rather than waiting for the PC to auto update.

changing the subject slightly. When you get the service pack, how about slipstreaming it. http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=295

Brim, sorry if I came off like I was stepping on your toes - didn't mean to.

Thank you for sharing that link Arctos. I could have sworn that when I first downloaded SP2, that MS wasn't offering SP2 on a CD anymore. I checked out your link and there's the order page!

I had looked for the link I used to download the full SP2. I went to a link that was for ITs and administrators - there are so many places to look! I couldn't find the link, but I remember that the download was a biggy for my 128k connection; the SP2 was in the mid-200 MB range and took a "few" hours for the download to complete.

Kerodude, did you get SP2 downloaded or order it, or are you still in the process?
