Hi, when I had to reinstall my firewall it took a long time so some spyware managed to get into my computer. It puts up two popup ads. 1 of them says "Mortgage rates hit record lows!" as its title and the other one says "Work full-time while earning your degree" in its title. please help, I have used Spybot search and destroy already.

Hi vdogmfrk
You could also try Adaware, a spyware removal program.
Download from...http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
Krystyna

neither of these is the problem, you need to disable the windows messenger service.
go in control panel, switch to catagory view, open admin tools, services and scroll down to the messenger service and right click on it, select disable.
it's an old service, held over from the old dos networking days. some spammers have started using it.
also config your firewall to block this as well.

I agree with one of the above comments...Use Mozilla or better still Opera Browser...It Kills IE6 in many ways and it actually stops popups if you select the setting.
It also has a magic wand for passwords...Its really great.
Regards

Your issue and how to block any websites using your hosts file is discussed here: http://www.everythingisnt.com/hosts.html

If they are popup ads, you can do like several people have stated already.
You should use Mozilla or Opera. In Mozilla, go to Edit >Preferences; then select Privacy >Popup Windows, and check "Block unrequested popup windows".
In Opera, hit F12 on your keyboard and select "Refuse popup windows" from the menu that'll pop up.
If the popups are actually messenger windows, click on Start > Settings >Control Panel >Administrative Tools > Services. Find Messenger in the list. Right-click on it and select Properties.
In the properties window, stop the service and then set the startup type to "Disabled".
The only way you'll get pop-ups after doing this is if you insist on using Internet Explorer, or if some spyware is on your computer already.
I should add that if it is spyware, it's using....you guessed it ......Internet Explorer.
Good luck to you.

Using a popup stopper is the only way. Download it at this url. Its free!

Another is to go to the control panel >> administrative tools >> services >> messenger >> Startup type - change to disable >> Service Status - stop. this should get rid of most pop-ups.
