how to get out of Windows XP 256 colors Mode

Specs: Windows XP
I have a Windows XP. I wanted to run a CD-ROM which required 256 colors. I selected the game on the Start menu,
right-click Properties, click the Compatibility tab, selected run in 256 colors check box.
Since I've done that it makes everything on my computer look like
basic 1990's computer technology. I tried to unclick the run 256
colors check box, but it doesn't give me a choice to now. There
is no box I can "de-click".
How can I get my computer screen appearance back to normal?

Have you tried on the desktop: Right Click => Properties => Settings Tab => and then Screen Resolution/Colors (either one, can't remember)? If this fixes it, you might have to do it each time you play the game, which might bite. Don't know a permanent fix, though.

It's a work in progress! =P
