How to get out of DOS mode

Microsoft Windows xp home sp2

Specs: Windows XP
Ok I had some virus troubles and I was able to work that out. I went into safe mode, did a system restore, installed norton antivirus, and cleaned my computer. Everything seemed to be going well until I tried to start a program and a black box came up and said "This program cannot be run in DOS mode." The box quickly goes away. I was able to start Internet Explorer by right clicking and clicking start on the list of options. None of my other programs have this option, so I cant open them. I hope somebody can help me with this problem.

Uncle Sam, "did a system restore" I suspect that's your problem. You had an infection, cleaned, restored (put the nasty back?). I'd disable restore first, then clean so it doesn't get put back.
Sounds to me like you did all the correct things, just in the incorrect order.

Sounds like .exe files have been associated wrong.
