I know I can put the XP CD in and format and load Windows but I only want to format and not load Windows because I have a backup image I want to load. I know the image will overwrite the format anyway but I was wondering how I could format in NTFS. I tried the command format c:/s/fs:ntfs but it would not work. I had booted from a Windows ME startup disk.

What software are you using to load the backup image? Most backup software doesn't require the target drive to be previously formatted, so maybe you can skip that step altogether.

Ok. So what happened when you tried?

What's the 's' in there? Try format c: /fs:ntfs

You could boot from the XP CD and use the Recovery Console.
