I know how to format a computer but this one won't let me format or reinstall windows... i get into windows setup it says it's too badly damaged to recover windows xp, so i try and reinstall and it shoots up a blue screen that locks the computer saying registry error... and i think the basis for the blue screen is that the hard drive isn't being detected, and the bell bios doesn't have an auto-detect option... i go into a dos promt and try and format C: but it tells me that it's not supported... maybe cause the hard drive is messed up... the computer was working but turned itself off and then started saying windows needed to recover itself, safe mode does not work... and all i can think of is wipe it but it's hard when you can't detect the hard drive... any ideas?????

How are you getting into a dos prompt? Doesn't dell computers have a recover disk? If you're trying to format from a 98 or ME startup disk maybe it won't work because the drive is formatted ntfs.

Hooner, Thanks for the site. I downloaded the NTFS reader it has killdisk on the floppy also. If it does what it says it might come in very very handy someday. Thanks again!
