How to fix Dell PC that crashed 2 years ago

August 30, 2011 at 16:13:30
Specs: Windows XP

hi, i got a dell windows xp.
my computer crashed 2 years ago and since then it doesnt work anymore, i want it to fix cause it was a really good pc. when i press my powerbutton then it loads (i think windows) but before the screen comes up where i can write my password to my username it just stays black and nothing happens. i cant get to safe mode or anything, it just doesnt load to that part, what i do can is going to bios and press all kinda "F" buttons and DEL, home and end button, what gives me a screen up.idk what to do in those screens to make it back work. what i also tried is a repairdisk that i got with by my motherboard but when i do that one in get a menu up and i cant move up or down to chose a subject and i cant press enter either to open the subject in the menu. what should i do?

I have just worked on a Dell, if you have a dial-up modem card on the motherboard & you don't use it, take it out & try again.

If it dos'nt boot, try doing a repair off the Dell XP CD.

Put the CD in & reboot, press any key when you get the message ( you only have a few seconds, this is the only time you press the key during repair )

Let it continue until you get the Options, select the Install option ( not repair ) & that eventually comes to another Options screen, select Repair.

Doing it this way, you keep most of your installed stuff.

thx about the info from the cd, i did that already and i pressed also a button when it came up that i need to press a button but when i do then the screen doesnt go further it just hangs. sometimes i get indeed a menu up but then i got the problem like i told before that i cant sellect anything on the menu and i cant move up or down to select another item in the menu. i tried also to recharge my batterys and then use keyboard again but it doesnt got any effect. i go try it soon again and thx for the info. if you know something more just let me know, all info is welcome.

thx for everything, greetings

i just tried again and when i do cd in and dont press anything then they say starting windows from cd or something and ask me to press any button but when i press nothing happens and it just loads further and i get black screen, i also just tried with an usb keyboard but no succes. what i also get up is that i can press F9 and that works to press and F9 means: gigabyte xpress recovery2. i guess thats what i need cause my motherboard got the name gigabyte S-series. so when i press F9 following screen comes up with message:plz insert cd gigabyte xpress recovery2 but it is in it and then they say, when its in it then press any key. i got 2 cd's, on one is written chipset utility CD and on the other vista utility cd. my pc was before xp and i always tried the chipset utility cd for recovery and not the vista, you think i should try the vista cd?

You have to be quick.

"you think i should try the vista cd?"
If you have XP installed, No.

i am very quick hehe but nothing happens, i swear i press it even in time limit from 1sec:P i know by now what screen comes next up so i also tried pressing already any key before it came up and kept pressing when it was up but it just loads further and stops. (in boot setup i cant move anything, like going up or down to select anything but probably i dont need to be there)

Now i got another problem, in the manuel it said: when that doesnt work, disconnect all cables except tv and keyboard then go to bios setup and select there "load fail-safe defaults" i did that and then saved changes and exit bios setup and now it just loads and doesnt show me anymore: press any key to startup xpressrecovery2. how can i undo the changes that i did in bios? i hope you can help me with this so i can try the xpressrecovery.

--> yea, i mean i see all kinda cables in my pc and everything got a wire what i see, so i need to unplug then something probably or just take it out. i took some pictures from the back so you can see where the internetcable goes in and then some pics from the inside so you can see also and maybe tell what one i should take out.

"Are you saying, when you have that computer connected to the Internet, you have to plug a wire into the back of the dial-up modem card to get the internet."

--> yes i can do that if i want but i never did that, i always had wireless internet and putted an USB stick in my pc to get internet

Thx for all info you gave already.

No, but Dell did fit a lot of computers with them & they gave a lot of trouble.

You don't have a Dial-up modem card fitted, so nothing to take out.

when i press F9 (xpress recovery2) then i get this message: please install xpress recovery2 from gigabyte CD title. press any key to continue.

hi i got it to work.

I got the avg rescue cd, and after a while trying in bios and boot menu i succeeded. i followed the steps from the 2nd movie on this website: http://www.avg.com/nl-nl/avg-rescue-cd
its a dutch website but the movie is in engmish (just press on topic "zo werkt het" on the left side and then take the 2nd movie.

on 5.06minutes in the movie i see 3 options. do i need to scan all 3? and then rename every virus it finds? cause i did now only from documents and settings and it found kinda many virusses but also at system32 (but those i need for starting up the pc, so should i just rename it?).

"do i need to scan all 3? and then rename every virus it finds? cause i did now only from documents and settings and it found kinda many virusses but also at system32"

Probably.

Once again, if in doubt, Google the exact name of the infection.

Here is more info on system32 virus removal
http://is.gd/7TKrjk
http://www.ehow.com/how_6148929_rem...

If it all seems to hard or risky, take your drive out & slave it to another computer, no need to bolt it in, just cable it up & support as necessary.

Now run all the infection tools you have, Google any infections that you can't remove.

I don't know why you are not doing what I think is the logical thing, here is what I would do.

1: Regional Options, alongside > Customize, on the left hand side, click the button & use the scroll bar to select your option.

2: Go down the bottom of the page to > Location, click the button & select your country.

3: Languages, click on > Details & select your > Default input language.

4: Installed Services, click > Add

5: Last page to open, Language for non-Unicode programs. Select your language.

6: Don't do anything else on that page.

If you don't get the desired result, play around with those settings.
