To begin with you can't install Win 98 on a system that already has Win XP installed on it.

Win 98 must be installed 1st then put in the XP CD & install that on a separate partition.

MS-DOS doesn't exist in WinXP (or NT or 2000) as they are built from the ground up. While windows 1.x, 2.x, 3.x, 95, 98, ME are just add-on's to DOS.

You will have to create a boot diskette to strart from and install Win98. If you don't have a Win98 bootdisk already, download a utility here http://www.bootdisk.com/ to create one.

One more thing... if you install Win98 when WinXP is already installed, the boot record will be replaced and you will only be able to boot into 98 (there are ways to fix this, not sure how, though. One way is to install 98 first, then install xp as xp will recognise 98 and you will be able to choose between them at boot).

I am aware that you can't install win 98 from win XP...thats why it would be nice to get rid of win xp..cause i really want the 98 back..is there any way to DESTROY the xp??

Jennifer, if WinXP is installed on an NTFS partition, you're pretty much SOL unless you reformat or use something like Partition Magic to convert the partition to FAT32. If WinXP is on a FAT32 partition, try this site for info on installing Win98 or WinME:

How do I install Windows® 98/Me after I've installed XP?
