How to Erase HDD XP OS

January 24, 2011 at 13:12:28
Specs: Windows XP, Athlon 64X2 4GB
I have a Lenovo 3000J 7387 26U desktop that I want to sell and attempted to run the Rescue & Recovery discs I made (Four DVDs) when I first purchased the unit. The first disc seemed to run OK but for some unknown reason I can not run the three Product Recovery discs, can not access windows or do anything other than get a message "incorrect disc"! I have not been able to get any answers from any of the Lenovo support folks. How can I run an HDD Erase program when I can't get to DOS. Any ideas, including removing the HDD and running over it with a bulldozer will be appreciated. Is the free "leaked" Vista download "real"?

The computer will lose some value if sold without an os. It's a steal for anyone who knows how to download the os that will work with the coa.

Take the hd out...set as slave and format it in another computer.

There are so many vistas with patches out there it's hard to say if your copy is a working counterfeit or a problematic bunch of 1 and 0s. Illegal ? yes.

The debate....was it leaked and by whom or is it a pirated version has been going on for years with every os.

The retail version of XP fits on a single 700MB CD with room to spare. Why would you need 4 DVD's (almost 19GB) to do a recovery?

If all you want to do is erase the drive, there are plenty of free utilities that can do that. All you have to do is download the software, burn to a CD, boot off it, then wipe the drive. Heck, if you have a floppy drive, you can do it all with a WinME boot floppy.

Try the Ultimate Boot CD (UBCD):

I can't get Ultimate Boot CD to run. I am getting the error code "The file or directory \MiniNT\setupapi.log is corrupt and unreadable. Please run Chkdsk Utility". I can't run Chkdsk because I can't get into Windows. It seems the CD drive is not booting -- is that because of the error ? Any ideas?
