how to disable processes

recently i've been having problems running games on my laptop, they would lag and be difficult to play, which has never happened before. I did a search on all of the processes running in the background and found that some of the processes were recommended to be disabled because they take up a lot of cpu memory. Also it recommended renaming some of the processes from .exe to .exe.old to prevent them running on startup. I tried using msconfig but it didn't show these processes so i couldn't disable or change their names. Does anyone know how one would go about doing this? Thanks in advance

You will have to have the Administrative Tools present, to do this right-click on the taskbar, click Properties, Click Start Menu tab, click Customize button, go to Advanced Tab, and click on Show Administrative Tools.
Go into Administrative Tools and click on the Services console, there you will find a list of services you can disable, be sure you know which ones ae ok to turn off or set to manual.

Double-click on the Service you want to disable and change to disabled from the pull-down box.
