Just so you know, IE is an integral part of Windows, if there's problem with your system try a practical solution before you butcher Windows.
When Google isn't your best pal

I'm assuming he's trying to delete the temporary files for internet explorer..
The reason those won't delete is because they are in use.. Even though IE isn't in use, there are many other programs on your computer that use IE (THis is why you can't uninstall IE).
To clear out your temp files that just wont simply delete go here.

Whatever your reason is - you cannot delete IE from Windows XP. Read again Sabertooth's response in Response Number 1 above.

Astalabista: you can remove internet explorer off your computer(IE). Doing this you will not have access to it anymore not even be able to recover it by searching it. What you need to do is go to CONTROL PANEL>ADD OR REMOVE PROGRAMS> (when you open it look to the left side) ADD/REMOVE WINDOWS COMPONENTS. There you will get a window and scroll down till you see INTERNET EXPLORER uncheck it and click next. Restart you system and IE will not exist anymore. Till you go back and check it again to reinstall it.

Just to add to what, operatingsystem05 said, when you use the Add/remove programs be sure that the "show updates" box is checked -- this if you cannot find IE in your list of programs (I believe the box is in both sp1 and sp2 of windowsXP). After uninstall, you might also want to delete any remaining files/folders that IE leaves behind in addition to performing a registry scan to remove all associated keys to your previous IE. Unfortunately, uninstalling leaves alot of clutter behind. So double check.
