Hi,
I have windows XP Pro and Windows 2003 Server loaded on my pc. Hard drive has 4 primary partitions with Multi-boot options. It has C,D,E,F partitions and actaully my friend loaded the O/S on my hard drive and while creating partitions he created 4 primary partitions and he left around 22 GB of space unpartitioned/unused. Now when i go into Disk manangement i do see that unpartitioned space, but when i right click on it, it does not give me an option to create a partition on that unpartitioned space. I tried booting using windows XP cd and then selecting the unpartitioned space to create a partition,it said maximum allowed partitions are 4 and it did not allow me to create a partition in that unused or unpartitioned space.
I would like to know if theres anyway i can partition that unpartitioned space and make use of that 20GB space without having to format or unpartition the other existing partitions.
Thanks in Advance.
regards,
Kiran

Normally four partitions are all that is allowed. That is why Extended Partitions and logical drives where invented. There is software that will allow you to create more than 4 primary partitions but I wouldn't recommend it. If you Master Boot Record gets damaged it could render the extra partitions unusable.
The only other way you can use the extra space is to extend the last partition into the unused space. For that you need some third party software like Partition Magic.
Alternatively from the Windows Disk Manager you could delete the last partition and recreate it, only this time using all the available disk space. Of course, anything you have on the last partition will be lost. If you can temporary copy and data into another partition then copy it back then that should work.

Hey guys,
thanks a lot for ur responses...when i right click on that unpartitioned space the only option available was properties.
After searching throuhg Windows Help on Diskmanagement, i found an option to extend one of the partitions and add the unused space to that partition and that too by just typing a couple of commands. It was so simple, i myself was surprised.
theres a command called "diskpart" run from command prompt.from the command prompt type, diskpart and hit return, it'll take u to diskpart>> prompt.
from there u can list all the partitions and then go to the desired partition to which u wanna add the unassigned space...and then once then type extend at the diskpart>> prompt. u can also specify how much space u wanna utilise. extend n(n=space in MB).
I am really sorry i dont remember the commands and i dont have internet at home.
Really appreciate all ur responses.
Thanks.
regards,
Kiran
