First of all, what kind of computer do you have, desktop pc or laptop?

If you have a desktop pc, you have to buy an additional hard drive and mount it to your pc.

If you have a laptop, you either have to exchange the hard drive or you can use an external USB hard drive.

re' Installing a larger HD - if system is a laptop - it may not allow one much larger (depending on make/model etc)?

As in Post-1 above - consider an external HD and transfer (copy) your data to that. Keep most of main (internal) HD space for immediate access of data; long term/seldom-accessed etc on the external drive;. And also ensure you have "all" data (regardless of use) copied to an external location/drive regardles (so as to have it safe in event of a system failure of the main HD).
