I had Win ME on my computer and upgraded to Win XP. I opted to leave the drive as FAT32 but I now want to change it to NTFS (I have another slower computer with Win XP + NTFS and it is much quicker). Is there some way I can change to NTFS without wiping all my files? I tried to re-install Win XP but when I selected NTFS, I was only given the option to change to NTFS system and loose all my data on drive C, or to abort the install (which I did). I may be wrong but if I use the DOS command convert c:/fs:ntfs, it'll format the drive and I'll loose all my data.
Many thanks,

To convert a volume to NTFS from the command prompt
Open Command Prompt.
In the command prompt window, type
convert drive_letter: /fs:ntfsFor example, typing convert D: /fs:ntfs would format drive D: with the ntfs format.
Notes
To open command prompt, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Command Prompt.
You can convert FAT or FAT32 volumes to NTFS with this command

The convert command does NOT format your drive. It converts the file system without destroying any data. At least, that's the theory. I've run it without any problems (but not before backing up my data - why take chances?).

Why not giving Partition Magic a try?
Very fast. Very safe. Works from any version
of Windows.
Try it.... you'll like it
