So you have a new HDD that you're connecting to your laptop? What do you mean it won't work? Have you installed Windows on it?

If the new drive is larger than 127gb, checkout 48bitlba.com. Your laptop might not be capable of recognizing the drive.

No it would not. XP will only run on the computer it is installed on. You would have to do a repair install at the very least.
Besides, if your laptop cannot access the hard disk, putting XP on it isn't going make any difference.

You might have to go to the Dell site and download a utility to prepare the disk for a 'DELL' restore (if that is what you are attempting to do).
Look for instructions on the dell site for replacing a hard drive.

You didn't answer my questions. Are you trying to install XP on this new laptop drive? If so, at what point is the install failing? Does the BIOS see the drive?

Q. so how come my m8s hdd works in my lappy ?
A. His is good
Does your hdd work in your m8s laptop?
Skip

no skip my hdd doesnt work in his just the same as in my lappy but his does work in mine. The reason why i need to install it from my pc is tht wen i go to install the xp on the lappy it doesnt recognise the drive and then powers off for some weird reason. But wen i use my m8s hdd it works fine (his has a known working correctly os on it) yes using a xp pro disc.

Did you read Response 9 where Jennifer ask you if the drive is seen in BIOS?
Your mates drive works in his machine and in your machine = a good hdd.
Your drive does not work in either machine = a not good hdd.
If BIOS does not see the drive, there is no operating system on this earth that will perform any magic and make the drive work.
On the off chance we can do anything with the drive, what is the manufacturer and model number of the hdd?
Skip

it recognises it in bios but then wen i do the clean install using my xp pro disc it says there is no harddrive detected then shuts down :(

After nearly 2 days you finally tell us it is recognized in BIOS. If you continue to refuse to answer our questions, no one here will try to help you.
One more time:
What is the manufacturer and model number of the hdd?
What is the exact model number or Service Tag number of your Dell. The Service Tag number is preferred by us.This is not hard. Works this way...
1. You read our questions.
2. You look for the information we want or answer the question.
3. You type that information in the box.
4. Finally, you click the Submit Follow Up box.Skip
