I can not change the file attribute "read only".

I've already tried this: control panel - folder options - security. I set "full control" for my user name for a whole partition and for all child objects. The mark "read only" is still here for each folder I look into it.

Of course, If I try to change the attribute manually (right click on folder - properties, and the removing the mark) it removes it, but the mark stays when I look into folder next time.

The read only attribute for folders in WinXP is the default and cannot be changed.

I agree with mikeo. It is by design. You can read this MSKB.

It's like this, If you are in an office or school and you have a folder, you put stuff in the folder or take stuff out of the folder. You can take stuff out, write on it, type on it, change it, then put it back in. You can put different things in it like a letter, a document, a warrenty, an instruction manual, etc. But you can't change the folder, sure you could shread it up real fine, I mean real fine and glue it back together but then it's not a folder anymore its toilet paper.
The same thing goes for a folder in Windows Explorer if you try to change it's attributes it will not be a folder anymore. That's why it's read only.

If you think about it, it makes sense. You can write to files inside a folder, but writing to the folder itself makes no sense.
