hi, how do i change my drive letters in winxp with SP2?

current state:
C:
D: (a partition of C) (wants to change to F:)
E: DVD-rom drive (wants to change to D:)
F: DVD-RW writer drive (wants to change to E:)

if you have any recommendation for a good app that can do it, appreciate your feedback.

i have Intel's Application Acceleration installed.. not sure if that has remmoved the ability to change my drives letters.

i have Partition Magic 8 but have looked there seems not able to help me.

My recommendation is that you don't do it if it's possible to leave things as they are.

It happens all too often that in the process of relettering drives the partitions corrupt into an "overlap" status and you get plagued with error messages, or worse, you lose access to one or more of your disks.

Please, if you decide to do it, WAIT until you get some further advise from people here on the forum who can tell you what precautions they took to avoid complications with their partitions.

If the system boots okay, and you can access all directories on all drives, your system is perfect as it is.

and she's looking out for you.

If your xp is pro:

Right click on My Computer, and click on "Manage". In the window that appears, click on "Disk Management" (Under "Storage)

In the bottom half of the window, right click on any DVD/CD Drive or HDD/Partition and click on "Change Drive letter and Paths". Click on "Change" and assign the letter you want.

Repeat for all drives.

If its win xp home, I don't know if its possible to do that.

I have changed drive letters many times, without any problems. Imagine the following scenario:

Partition E: (partition of C that I want to be D:)

CD Writer D: (that I want to be E:)

I would change the CD Writer to F:, change the E: partition to D:, and change the CD Writer again to E:.

If you have programs installed on your Partition that you change the letter, you might have to reinstall them / redirect the shortcuts to the new path.

What you want to do is really pretty easy in XP pro.First go to control panel.Click on performance and maintenance and then administrative tools.Next double click on the computer management icon.Double click on the storage icon in the right half of the window. Finally double click on the disk management icon in the right window. All of your drives should be displayed along with their respective drive letters.Hard drives and partitions above, and optical drives below. To change drive letters simply right click on the drive you wish to change and choose change drive letter and path from the dropdown menu.In the new window select change. You will have a drop down menu on the right of the new window that will let you select a new drive letter. Two things to think about.First, you won't be able change a drive to a letter that is already in use.For example:you want to change E to D but D is already assigned.First change D to a letter that is out of the way and not in use like M.Now D will become available for change.Change your E drive to D,and now you can go back and change the M drive to suit your preference. The second thing is that programs installed on a drive or partition with its drive letter changed may have to be reinstalled to function,as the program location will have been changed. You may get around this by clicking on the program icon, and if windows can't find it let it do a search.Hope all of this helps you.

Did you read any of the previous posts?

That's exactly what I suggested, only your method takes a longer (going to control panel -> admin tools to get to Computer Management instead of just right clicking on "My Computer" and then on "Manage" ;-)

Please try writing in paragraphs too, big blocks of text disintegrate my eyes :P

Maian, not that anything I posted was any of your business, but I tried to go through the process step by step so the original poster could follow it.This is a help forum, not a little braggart boy forum. Before you do any more critiques on anything posted here perhaps you could have someone give you a few lessons in manners and common courtesy.

trimmie,
Thanks.we loose a lot of good, helpful posters because they don't want to deal with the rude little kids that always seem to lurk on this board. They need to go to a kids sight somewhere where they can impress each other with their nonsense instead of bothering people who are trying to help.

OK, sorry for seeming rude and braggy. I meant that it's quicker to get to computer management through right clicking on My Computer and then clicking on "Manage".

Back on subject, I prefer to set my cd drives to R for cdr and W for cdrw.

But you need to do this from the gitgo.

Otherwise you will run into the problem of when you need to update an install or change a windows component, it will stop and ask for the path to the files on the cd.

So also will there be problems if you have installed apps on d: and then change to f:. You will need to search and update those pointers in the regsitry or uninstall and reinstall. FYI
