How to bring back folders/files name after error checking

Specs: Windows XP, Core 2 Duo
I have external drive transcend store jet 1 TB as my back up. It was almost 450 GB back up file including software programs, documents, pdf, music, photos, videos and back up data for 2 laptop. It was pretty new after I upgrade from seagate go flex agent 250 GB.

My problem appear after all of a sudden the usb cable which attached to my computer just slip a bit because of a little movement and then I tried to put it back to it's position. Too bad when I click my computer to see the drive was not there. So I unplug and plug it but still it did not recognized. So I try log out and start over. The drive now was recognize but the volume is empty and all of my back up were not there. In panic mode, I tried to chkdsk \f through cmd but the computer fail to did it and ask bla bla bla unmount the volume next start up? (I can't recall exactly) I checked yes. I booted again and still the volume of the disk is empty. I tried to do error checking in properties>tools>error-checking>there were 2 options that I click both of them
( "Automatically fix file system errors” and “Scan for and attempt recovery of

After hours of processed, I did not have anything at all, still empty even the disk had no label only Local Disk. It used to be label StoreJet Transcend USB Device.

I did not know what to do to bring back my data. I have spent days browsing every where to find answer. One source said to look at winrar and yes I can see all the files but all in .chk. All folders/files name vanished for 450 GB data. I almost faint because I don't have full back up only half of it.

Now I tried I care data recovery. The problem is it can recover data on my disk drive but can not bring back folders name. I can say that even though the program can recover data but file structure is ruin. Folders name disappear and labeled as directory. I can see raw files, folder found 0000 and 0001 in the disk drive through recovery but I don't know what to do with this files. I chose to recover file only in folder directory and put all in new disk drive.

Please help me to solve my problems as I am so desperate if I do rename all directory manually as there are thousands. It can spent years of my life just to do it. God bless you who can give me way out. Thank you so much before.

Not easy. We once had a very persistent poster who tried about everything. Eventually he recovered the info with this:

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Thank you for your advice Derek. I have tried z-a recovery to recover photos in sd card. It's a very good freeware but all name's file different from original. I think it doesn't matter if it is a photo file but I want to bring back here is original folder names or files system not just a list of files or sorted file types. I really regret that I did error-checking before because this task was damaged my files system backup data. I just want to know is there is a software that can undo error-checking to it's previous state before.

My, albeit limited, experience with file recovery software is that they can recover files - but not restore/rebuild folders and their structure. You end up with whatever number of individual files and have long task of sorting them out...

Yes, that exactly I am facing now. Just wish that is a software that can undo chkdsk. Even my disk now became raw and I can see the raw files which are in huge amount almost 1,3 TB. Don't know what to do with this raw files?

Is there any other option within the recovery software you're using- other than to use the RAW approach?

Actually, the recovery software I am using now is pretty good in recover my files but not files structure, several folders tree came back to it's original name but most of all into other name. There are also raw files which I think only useful if you open it one by one and rename it manually. What a waste of time. I think I want to try again with z a recovery as I have tried I Care Data Recovery in many different scan methods but still it can't bring back it's original main folder name's.
