Just an FYI...

We often get posts asking about how the heck can one boot Windows from USB storage device, such as external USB drives & flash drives.

According to the following M$ white paper, it is not easily done unless BIOS vendors, IHVs, and OEM system builders work together vigorously to make it possible for us.

Most recent motherboards permit booting from USB devices.

I myself have created bootable USB flsah drives for my own purposes.

Mandriva have a USB bootable Linux distro which you can carry with you and use on later model PCs that support booting from USB. Thus allowing you to take your favourite distro (browser settings et all) wherever you go.

There are other examples I am sure.

HI mosaddique - good to see you back.

This isn't about the bootability of USB storage devices. It's about booting M$ Windows from it. Have you done that?

Hi XpUser,

Never been away, just been keeping a low profile (or busy doing other things). I know you almost left. I am sure you must have read my comments on that thread.

Apologies. I thought you meant simply booting from USB.

I have not done windows, but I have read that it is doable on a modern machine.

Here is a link to one such site that claims it can.
Windows In Your Pocket

It is based on using the program Bart PE Builder (Freeware).

Yeah thanks for the comments you added last week - I appreciate it.

As for Toms Hardware claim - it's based on Bart PE. It would be great if we have the ability to install & boot from Windows on USB drives. It's not likely to happen any time because the Redmond behemoths ties Windows to the machine hardwares including the HD. I read somewhere that the "low-level IDE driver is loaded first, without any checking being performed. If it’s changed… death."

Somewhere (not over the rainbow on this occasion) - recently... I came across a detailed how to do it - not using Bart as I recall. Still trying to find it again; but meanwhile a trawl for simliar coughed up the following:

http://www.ngine.de/index.jsp?pagei...

and a discussion (which does include references to Bart) on the issue at:

http://www.informationweek.com/wind...

And on the last page (4) of this seoncd ref. there are assorted links to various angles; and I think following a "kwik luke..." there is at least one other ref to it - and it may not be using Bart?

seems to offer a way - courtesy of M$?

However I'm not that (at all) familiar with XPe...; perhaps XPuser can enlighten me (please)?

Sure... but Wikipedia already explained it best HERE. In short ...

XPe is the componentized version of XP Pro used in devices such as ATMs, slot machines, cash registers, etc. XPe is marketed towards developers for OEMs, ISVs and IHVs that want the full Win32 API support of Windows but without the overhead of XP Pro.

As for Langa's writeup I've read it before and it parallel the recommendations set forth in the M$ article.
