Go to
Start >Settings >Control Panel >Administrative Tools >Services.

Find the service called "Messenger". Right-click on it, and select "Properties". Change the "Startup Type" to "Disabled".

Then click on "Stop" to stop the service.

On our Windows XP system, UDP port 1027 is used by RPC services started by the
Messenger service. As in Windows 2000, this port and UDP port 135 will no longer
be opened after disabling this service and rebooting.

Or ,

Try blocking ports 1024 to 1030.

READ THE POST BEFORE TRYING TO ANSWER SOMEBODY'S QUESTION!

For crying out loud he said MSN MESSENGER not the messenger service. If you don't know the difference then save everyone the hassle and don't post anything.

As far as disabling MSN Messenger, just uncheck the box in the Options box (Tools > Options > General Tab). Uncheck the box "Automatically run when I start Windows".

If you're looking in the process list and seeing the msnmsgr.exe process then you might try something else, but remember that there are quite a few applications such as Outlook that use the Messenger APIs. This means that sometimes both the msmsgs.exe and msnmsgr.exe processes will start up without your initiating them. Don't worry about them, they don't take up much system resources at all.

Happy NewYear, Dr.Nick !!

Actually, Dr.Nick, I made that judgement call in my first response.
Paolo_90 never really narrowed it down. But I must admit that:

-As always- your answer is the most complete & to the point of any answers given in this thread and the one I've linked to.

Once again, I must bow to my Master.
May your NewYear be as good as your response !:)

Thanks svg, for the sentiments and kudos, same to you!

My response is of course only directed at the guilty parties... you know who you are :)

Windows and MSN messenger can be fun to deal with. I really do wish that MS hadn't made so many Office and other apps dependent on Windows Messenger, but oh well.

Sorry Dr. Nick.
If I had an inkling I was messing up your forum I wouldn't have even logged in today.

Please be careful, I've been bored today and I've responded to quite a few posts. There might have been some mispellings as well. Please bypass those because I'd hate to be flamed multiple times.

Happy Birthday!!!

Holy crap. People are so sensitive and take everything so personally.

Obviously this isn't my forum and also quite obviously I couldn't care less if you misspell when you post. Careful though, your sarcasm is rising pretty high and there's no life gaurd on duty...

I didn't flame you. If you get flamed it means that you've been singled out and are being directly slammed. What I did do was express my irritation because every time somebody asks a question regarding Windows or MSN Messenger there are always several people who don't bother to read the post and just paste some junk about stopping the Messenger service.

Like I already said above, my comment is directed to those that don't bother to read the original post before giving an "answer". Whether or not this describes you is up to you.

Oh, and it's not my birthday, but thanks anyway.

If more people want to compain fine, I'm done justifying.

Think before you do this.
Here is a string that will UNINSTALL Messenger:
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

I like to muck about with my PC & have installed windows so many times (lost count) & when installing XP this is one of the first things i do with no problems.
