Hi

My computer runs Windows XP Pro, but unfortunately it was crashed this afternoon. It took so long to get to the login screen, and then when I click to sign in my Windows account, it took forever. I have tried to use Windows XP CD to fix the problem, but it doesn't work. Now, I would like to backup my favorites to the other partition in that hard drive BEFORE I re-install a fresh copy of Windows XP again on drive C. So how can I do it? I have tried to use the DOS prompt screen to backup the favorites, but this method seems not to work well. Any other way to backup my favorites so that I can IMPORT it back to the Internet Explorer later on?

Thank you so much

Drill down to your favourates folder and just drag and drop the entire folder to your other partition..

Once the reload is done just drag and drop it back to whre it should be...

Or if its not that big just send it to your floppy drive, or burn it to a cd..

Thas all you need to do..

Hope that helps

Thank you Janos. But I couldn't sign into my Windows account anymore. I can only use Windows XP CD to go into the recovery and so it allows me to use the DOS commands such as COPY, CD, DIR, etc.

When I tried the recovery feature of the Windows XP Pro to fix the problem, it just stay at "preparing installing" there forever. So I restart the computer again and remove Windows XP CD, but then it also get back to that Windows setup screen again and ask me to insert the Windows XP CD. After I put the CD in, it also stays there forever.. No progression at all.

I really appreciate for any helps

Right now, I couldn't go into the Safe mode anymore. When I have just gotten into the Safe mode, a pop-up message said that Windows XP couldn't run under the Safe mode anymore. Then click OK, it restarts the computer again. If I go into the safe mode before attempting to use the recovering feature of Windows XP, I might be able to copy the favorite folder. But now, it is too late....

Thank you so much

Run the instalation as per normal.

When the installer reaches the the point where it asks you if you wish to use the same Intalation folder, or create a new one choose the option which allows you to sue the current folder..

All its going to happen is the main system files will be replaced but all the rest should remain, that includes the favourates and programs folder.

But you will still need to reinstall the programs even though the folder is still there.

Good luck

I believe you are talking about a parallel install. I wrote these instructions for myself but they may help you also..

Perform a Parallel Install (Same partition)(New Windows Folder)

A parallel install of Windows XP is always a good idea If you are unable to boot into your original install of XP. You can boot into a parallel install to get access to the original install. From the parallel install you can replace registry files, modify registry files, replace bad driver files and retreive data. (files)
A parallel install of XP should only be done to repair your original install or retreive data, It is not meant to replace your original installation.

1. Start your computer from the Windows XP/CD Rom

2. Watch for the prompt to "Press any key to boot from CD" (Loads Files) "Do not use again"

3. At the Welcome to setup screen, press Enter to begin the windows XP setup

4. End user license agreement, Press F8

5. To continue installing a fresh copy of windows XP without reparing press "ESC"

6. To setup Windows on the selected item press "Enter"

7. To continue setup using this partition Press "C"

8. Select the "Leave The Current File System Intact"(No Changes) option, press "Enter" to continue

9. Press ESC to install to a different folder

10. When the Install detects another OS it prompts you to type a name for the new folder after the slash(\), for example you could type \WINXP. if no other OS is detected the setup program automatically assigns \WINDOWS, press "Enter"

11. you will go thru the regular Windows setup, Product Key, ETC

12. When the install is complete click "My Computer' and you will have access to both windows folders.

12. After repairs are made and/or files are saved you should delete the new Windows folder by restarting the computer and booting to the old windows setup.

13. Go to start/Run and type "msconfig", Open "Boot.ini" , highlight the new OS, click on "check all boot paths" and remove the entry for the new windows setup. .

Thank you Janos. Right now, I removed my hard drive and connected to the other computer as a slave drive. I can access all information, but for the favorite folder, I couldn't access it because it is protected. So if I copy the whole folder "Documents and Settings", which has many accounts and favorite folders to the the other drive, can I access them later on?

Thank you so much

I really appreciate your input birdlegs. I might try your method later. But now, as I mentioned in my previous message, I have removed the hard drive from my old computer and connected it to the other computer as the slave drive, but I also have problem to copy the favorite folder because it is protected. However, I can copy the folder "Documents and Settings", which contains all windows accounts and favorite folders, but I don't know if I can import them to the Internet Explorer later on after I re-installed my Windows XP OS? Thank you so much

ok, this is what i done before when i could not get into my system and did not remember the password to get by the login screen

copy c:\windows\system32\logon.scr c:\windows\system32\logon.bak {Enter}
del c:\windows\system32\logon.scr (Enter}
copy c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe c:\windows\system32\cmd.bak {Enter}
ren c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe c:\windows\system32\logon.scr {Enter}

Then reboot when the system reboots go and have a coffee, when you see the command window type

net user administrator password {Enter}

The password will now be set to password, reboot and change logon.bak to logon.scr and cmd.bak to cmd.exe

this will reset your password and you WILL be able to get into your system with everything in place...no reformating hard drives or losing data

Thank you new_at_this. I think that your situaton is different from mine. I still remember the password of my account, but the Windows was crashed, so I couldn't sign into my Windows account. So I followed birdlegs's method to install Windows XP again on the same partion, but in different folder so that I can copy my favorite folder to a different local drive. However, I couldn't access the favorite folder due to the protection of that folder. For example, if your Windows account is Computer Administator and you created another Limited account. If you sign into the Limited account, you couldn't access the favorite folder of your Computer Administrator account.

one last chance at things on my part...if the partition that you have your windows xp on is formatted in the ntfs file system...then do one of two things...this one the simplest i suppose...try to copy the folder to a floppy disk...or 2...make a small partition and format it as FAT, then copy the file...a file that is on a NTFS file system can be copied to FAT file system and will loose any protection that it has...then if you copy the file back to the NTFS file system, the it should carry the unprotected FAT fil to the NTFS partition

Thank you. There is one way I can do by using Windows XP CD to get into DOS Prompt screen that allows me to use DOS commands such as COPY, but I have a question about using DOS Prompt command. How can I specify to copy all files, folders, and subfolders in DOS screen?
For example:
c:>\Documents and Settings\myname\favorites\ COPY *.* e:\temp

The above command only copys all links in the favorites folder, but not the folder and subfolders.

Thank you so much

you can use the following command to get a folder and subdirectories to copy:

xcopy /h /s c:\folder a:\

/S Copies directories and sub directories except empty ones

/H Copies hidden and system files also

you may have to leave the / switch out of the a:\
and hope that there is enough space on the floppy...if not, it is obvious you will need to create a small partition or copy it to a any other media such as a zip drive or cd...

the XCOPY command is working in DOS Prompt, but when I use the Windows XP CD to boot into the recovery feature, there is no XCOPY command. It only has COPY command. So how can I use COPY cammand to copy all folders and subfolders?

Thank you so much

If there is no other way to copy folders and subfolders by using COPY command, then I probably have to create each subfolders manually and copy its contents. This is a really pain because there are about 20 folders

Thank you new_at_this. But there is a problem. After I booted into the recovery with the black screen, but the COPY command in there won't understand the wildcard such as COPY * e:\temp. It won't understand "*"

well...if that is the way you typed in the command it is possible that the command will not be recognized...the propre commonad should be copy e:\temp *.* ... try the switch /s and /h ... i cannot do anyof this...i am at work and the administrators here have it so that we cannot access the hard drive, so i cannot test this out...by the way, the only way you can get into your computer is thru the recovery console?...
