I am trying to correct a windows problem but i cannot switch the files while windows is in use. I also cannot access these files while using MS-DOS startup disk because they are on the NTFS partition of my main hard drive. Is there anyway to recognize NTFS partitions on DOS before windows loads?

No because XP has no DOS SubSystem, you need a Boot Floppy or Boot CD as stated above and also many times in these forums.

There are many both DOS and Linux based Bootable media available for such circumstances like:

What Windows problem are you trying to correct, and what files are you trying to "switch" and why? Perhaps we can help with the real problem you're having.

The way to access your files "in DOS" is to NOT USE DOS. Use your system startup disk, and go through the prompts at setup until you can select the repair console. There's an option in there (somewhere) to end up at a COMMAND LINE (which IS NOT DOS)

Look this page over:

and note this:

You press R at the appropriate time to select the Repair Console. If you do this correctly, you can log into the drive and issue commands SIMILAR TO DOS

THIS IS NOT DOS
