I want to back up files on a home LAN from 3 other PCs to a main PC with a
big external HD. The main PC is XPPro SP2 and the 3 others are running XP
HOME SP2

I need to back up the Program Files folder from each of the remote PCs as
there is information in that folder that will greatly assist a recovery if
needed.

When using the Backup utility provided in XP it will not select the Program
Files directory...nor can I see the contents of this Folder using Windows
explorer from the main PC. When attempting to set to "Share", that option
is greyed out for Program Files folder.

Is there a way to make the Program FIles folder Sharable to the main PC?.

Any tips appreciated

Have you looked at the Map Drive Tool? Works like a charm.

What you can do is make a copy of your Program Files and change the name and put in a different location and then you can share the folder.

OS: Win XP Pro SP2 CPU: Mobile AMD Athlon XP-M Speed: 1600+ at 1.40GHz Ram: 256MB of RAM

Follow up, you will need to share the drive that contains the Program Files, but you don't need to allow others to make changes. Thiw will allow mapping to the folder level.

Ran into the same problem with XP Pro when I had to share the program files folder so that 3 other networked pc's could access it.

Double-click My Computer, then click Tools. Click Folder Options, then click the View tab. Scroll down to the bottom and uncheck Use Simple File Sharing. Click Apply, then OK.

After doing this I was able to share the Program Files folder using the normal sharing process that works with every other folder.

Don't know if any other pc settings will affect this, but it worked for me. Good Luck!
