I tried to install XP professional final version on my AMD 500 mhz, 256 MB ram 15.0 gig hdd ( Nothing on it )
and it took over 8 hrs to install and be able to run Xp. I Is it the normal length of time it takes to install or my system is bad ? I tried with a smaller HDD and took the same time. It takes few hours once I see " Pls wait while files are copied to Hdd ". Is it normal to that long ?
Booting to a foppy and installing XP from DOS will take that long.
Booting to the CD directly and installing should take just under 1 hour.

I did a test on installing XP because I was curious about so many posts related to installation problems in this group and all the others. It must be the most popular subject.
Installing by /i386/winnt.exe, although it worked, it took hours, don’t know exactly how long because I eventually left it running overnight.
Booting off the CD it took 23 minutes to install.

This is recommended on the Win XP CD. It is supposed to dramatically speed up the process, I don’t know by how much as I haven’t tried it.
p.s. The install time is going to vary according to your hardware configuring, not just your system performance.

That is really funny BECAUSE I did a clean install from DOS with the 6 flopy disk and it only tock about 50 minutes. That was installing it on a AMD Athalon 500MHZ with 512MB RAM and a 40 GIG HDD. That was the Win XP Pro Build 2600.
