Well, your laptop should still be worth about 200 pounds +, however it may be good looking around (say ebay) and finding out how much other people are selling theirs for if you want ALL your information from the hard drive removed, stick a nail though it, pour boiling acid over it and then fire it into the sun if you want the next best thing, use http://www.dban.org/

To preserve your data in the safest way, install a new HDD in the laptop then you can put it in an enclosure for 2.5" Drives and use it for backup on your desktop. You KEEP your Data. There is nothing to learn from someone who already agrees with you.
