Just curious how much gig XP pro takes up on average. Someone told me 2 gig at one time, but I have seen different amounts by users. And is there a difference in amount between home and pro?

it can vary. ive seen 1.2 gb to 2gb from pro.
might be a minor difference between the 2 versions but nothing worth mentioning

Is there another way to clean out unused items still lingering from other Windows versions besides going to add and remove programs to save on more space?

other ways yes. recommended ways, no.
you can get programs like norton utilities which will clean up loose ends in the start menu and registry
you can get programs like quaterdeck cleansweep which will target unused dll's.
you can rifle through windows explorer deleting folders you recognise and dont want.
all have problems associated with them so in general add/remove is by far the best option.

Miracle, Does Norton CleanSweep work the same as this "quaterdeck cleansweep" that you mentioned to clean out unused dll's?
If so how do you clean them out with Norton?

Sprank... take the advice of a previous poster... both those programs have inherent problems and unless you know what you are doing you can create more problems than you have now. Best left well alone.

I would not be using Cleansweep.. I use it and it removed files that bacically put my computer our of use until i reinstall the operating system.. If your hard drive is big enought I say let the stuff stays unless it dangerious to the computer.

Chris, Norton CleanSweep is a awesome tool if you use it correctly. The main function that I use it for is to eliminate my cookies and for the fast and safe cleanup function.
Earlier versions of CleanSweep (like 2000) did have some functions that could mess up your system in the worst way, but with the 2002 version it will tell you "if" your getting rid of something that you don't want to.
It truly saves your system!

Sprank... If you have used Norton and are familiar with it then use it! Your post is a bit superfluous in the circumstance... or were you just looking for someone to agree with you?

XP pro has taken up 1.5 g in 15 machines that I have put it into. These range from lower end desktops to high end laptops. The ONLY time I ever seen it take 2 g's is in IBM Netvista Desktops.

Here is a line from one of your posts above:
"If so how do you clean them out with Norton?"
I rest my case!
