Specs: XP, 2 GB
Gateway Laptop w/ XP. After windows auto update, computer will not boot. Tried restore disk, but won't go that far to start CD. Did get a message a windows file was corrupted before computer shut down, but regrettably was not able to write the file down before the computer shut down and have not been able to get that far again.

What could be causing this and how could I get computer to boot? Again, when turning it on, the hard disk light blinks maybe 4-5 times before shutting down w/ no action on the screen. Action is similar whether booting w/ or w/o restore CD.

Not sure what is going on here. I'd try to make a ultimate boot cd and run some of the tests. Start with memtest.

Why did it take me over a year to phone in a problem to ATT?

Sounds like maybe a power problem since it shutsdown before you even get to the post.
