HOW DO YOU INSTALL WINDOWS XP HOME FULL VERSION?I REFORMATED MY HARDRIVE USED A BOOT DISK AND CANT INSTALL XP IT TELLS ME YOU CAN NOT START SETUP IN DOS????HOW ARE YOU SUPPOSE TO INSTALL XP ON A CLEAN DRIVE.CAN ANYONE HELP?
THANKS
BOB

enter your bios and change your first boot device to cd, then it should work. On the other hand if u have similar system to me u will get major problems and probably have to wait for a bios flash update from your mainboard manufacturer because I have tried many different methods of installing xp on my epox 8K7A+ all with constant freezes during install.

If your computer does not support a bootable CD as mentioned above then you can boot with a Windows 98 boot disk (to enable the CD rom). Then go to the I386 directory on your windows XP CD and run the WINNT32.exe program. This should allow you to install XP under DOS. After you run it, try setup again.

Steve, winnt32.exe is for install from Windows, winnt.exe is for dos install.
also, BOB GASPER, u probably will want use smartdrv.exe that will increase first part of setup in 50 times. u can find this file on Win9x CD.

Am I missing something here. I don't have XP but as I understand it, you just autorun it in the normal way on your Win98 or WinME or whatever you have and it will ask if you want to format your disc before installing the OS. have I misunderstood what I've read about it?

I got the same problem, but im running under XP Pro, how do i go to the I386 directory in dos?? do i just type F:\ and let it bring to the F:\ drive letter, (F is my CD-Rom Drive) then type I386?? Cuz when i do that it says bad command file name, or does Pro don't have I386 directory?

i'm try to install win xp after formatting my HD and it seems stuck in the middle of the installation in the stage that the installation program copy windows xp installation files .
what could be done to install it perfectly ?

All are true. If you already have ME or 98 you can just autorun and install. The original question was for a formatted hard drive however. If you can change the boot sequence in your bios to boot from the cd-rom first you may do that. If you can't you can boot with a win98 boot disk to get cd rom support
say f: is your cd drive
type
cd f: (enter)
cd i386 (enter)
(you should be at c:\i386 now)
winnt32 (enter)this will start the install process
