I'm trying to install new drivers from my video card (Gforce 4200) and when I un-install the current drivers and reboot the computer XP installs their signed drivers before I can install the ones I want. Please help! This is frustrating!!!!!!

open device manager
go to the properties of the video card
click the driver tab
click update driver, then direct it to the new driver

If your trying to install drivers from the Nvidia web site just run the EXE file you downloaded from them.
I would recommend using the drivers from Nvidia. They work very well with XP.

Dear friend,
After you uninstall the current drivers and prompted to restart do not press yes, instead go ahead with the installation of your new drivers and then REBOOT,some people do installation without uninstallating the current drivers,it also works and also by booting into safe mode but the important thing is do not go for restart but leave the restart window as it is and go ahead with the installation of the new drvers and the drivers version in device manager.

I downloaded the nvida drivers and installed them over the drivers that XP has but when I play Battlefield 1942 I'm getting 60-50 FPS, which is bad! When I had the 41.09 drivers installed I was getting 98-86 FPS.
I need to remove all VGA drivers and reboot and install my own. I can't do that because XP installs their drivers as soon as the PC boots.
I can't use the update driver option because XP does not let me pick the .exe file to install.
Any help on how to stop XP from installing the drivers at start up so I can install my own would help...Oh...I also disabled the PnP service but that did not work also!
Thank you

Which nVidia drivers did you download? The only ones I can find on their site are the 41.09 set.
All that I did to get my 4400 working was install the nVidia drivers over the Windows xp default drivers.
Windows can't use the graphics card without drivers. If it doesn't have said drivers, then Windows can't display anything. That would make it a bit hard to update the drivers to the nVidia version.

Windows can display without drivers. If what you said were true you would be screwed. How could you even install the drivers if you could not see to do it?
I wanted to use detonator drivers for my card, which are pre-release versions of drivers from Nvida.
My problem is when I install any Nvida/Detonator drivers over XP default drivers I lose around 20-30 FPS in my games. This sucks! I need to get XP not to install the Microsoft approved drivers and let me install the driver of my choice. Right now I can’t do that...

Go to " Display Properties ", " Settings ", " Advanced ", " Adapter " and " update driver " tab. Then point to the path of the " inf " file of your graphics card.
If Windows asks whether you want to install, click Yes. But make certain Windows is so configured as to either accept or ask for unsigned driver installation. For this go to Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager -> Display Adapter -> Your Graphics Card. Double click on it to open up Properties and make the configuration there.
Hope the above helps.
Regards
