I believe that the proper command is:

Format c:s/

Try that. It should work.

Boot from your floppy and run fdisk. Delete the "Non-DOS" (NTFS) partition and repartition the drive.

MS-DOS will not read a NTFS drive.

format c: /s copies the system files, but XP doesn't use these files. Fdisk and format are NOT USED with XP and 2000. this is not Win9X anymore. as stated above, boot from your XP CD and run the installation to reformat your drive.

You won't be able to format using NTFS, lose this and try again and all should be ok! :)

XP would have an NTFS partition. if you wanna install XP again, just boot from the install disk and you will get an option to format the disk in either NTFS or FAT32 partition. you can use those options out there. if u wanna uninstall xp and then install some other OS then first of all from the a: run this command:
--
A:\>DEBUG
- f 200 L200 0
- a 100
xxxx:0100 mov ax,301 (ignore segment:offset values at left)
xxxx:0103 mov bx,200
xxxx:0106 mov cx,1
xxxx:0109 mov dx,0080
xxxx:010C int 13
xxxx:010E int 3
xxxx:010F (Press ENTER an extra time here)
- d 100 LF
xxxx:0100 B8 01 03 BB 00 02 B9 01-00 BA 80 00 CD 13 CC
(make sure that hex values match above line before proceeding)
(if values do not match, type Q and start over)
- g=100
(ignore register display)
- q (quits back to DOS)
--
after doing this you need to do a fdisk to recreate the paritions. you can use this link to learn more about fdisk:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q255867

after the fidsk, you can finally use your format c: command and after doing that, use your OS cd to install the operating system.

all the best!!

Just use your XP Disk you can format from it. As someone stated before the disk will ask you if you want to format c as NTFS or Fat 32. Make your choice and format c: I have already doen this twice.

Just use your XP disk as a boot disk. You may have to make a change in your BIOS so it sees the CDROM as a BOOT disk, as someone has already said. The disk will ask you if you want to format as NTFS and Fat32 your choice

If your using a Win98 boot disk don't use the /s switch. Doing so could result in a dual boot setup. Just use format c: If the drive is ntfs this won't work.

It depends whether you changed the hard drive file format to NTFS, if so, then boot from the XP cd, and format it through that, selecting it as FAT32 or NTFS, and then it can be formatted, if it's been left as FAT32, boot from a Win9X disc, and you can format it through that, the /s will copy the relevant system files, so it won't be copying XP system files from a Me startup disc
