How do you boot up in Dos mode?

I'm trying to reformat my harddrive but I can't figure out how to boot up in dos mode. I tried fromatting from the dos window in XP but it says the "handle" on my h/d is being used. Then I booted up in safe mode with the dos promt, but it says the same thing and won't let me format. How do you boot up in a pure dos mode? Or is there another to reformat without having to go to dos? TIA!

1)take a blank floppy disk and put it in the drive 2)right click on the drive and select format 3)check option to "create DOS startup disk" 4)click ok 5)reboot with floppy still in drive and your there!! Jimi_l

Try going into the bios and setting the floppy to boot first
