win xp automatically downloaded a windowsupdate and i want to remove it. it hasn't been installed yet; i don't know how this happened as i have my automatic updates set to "notify me but don't automatically dowload or install them". but now the yellow shield icon in my taskbar is asking me if i want to install an update i did NOT choose to download. i have no idea what the update is and would like to find out.

also, since i did NOT choose to download the update, how do i remove it? because now my computer is hassling me to "Turn off to install important updates". when did they start doing that? i remember having to update, download, and then given the option to install right then. now i have to turn off my comp to install?

also, i don't want to turn off my automatic updates. i just want to remove this one because it is annoying me. please does anyone know what to do?

The update that ran yesterday for some ungodly reason was the malicious file removal tool
You can verify this by clicking on the yellow shield in your task bar and select it and it will show you what it is and ask to be downloaded and you have the ability to deny the download at that time.

If you also shut off the notification and just periodically go the Windows Update you can choose Custom and you will be presented with a list of available updates. You can choose to install some, all, none.

I recommend that you never install any hardware drivers from Microsoft.

i tried. apparently it's already downloaded itself without my confirmation. plus it doesn't show what it is. i don't know if it is the malicious file removal tool as i had other updates i hadn't downloaded either. now when i click the yellow shield it says "updates are ready for your computer. click here to install these updates" and offers me either express or custom installation.

i'm trying to get rid of this. similar to how you can get rid of an exe file that hasn't installed anything yet. is that possible?

Go to Conrol Panel> add/ remove programs. Check the box to show Windows updates. After the screen is done loading look at the dates to see what was installed on the date in question. You can Google each of the listings to find out what they are.

Installed updates can be removed using "Add/Remove Programs". But you would have to know the update 6 digit number.

Also removing updates in the wrong order causes this ---

Removing Windows software updates in the wrong order may cause the operating system to stop functioning

I would prefer removing them using
System Restore to a date when all was good.
Start >All Programs >Accessories >System Tools

Using System Restore too many times can cause
more harm than good. After doing a restore
that does not fix a problem, then UNDO the
Restoration, and try another restore point, or
just do the UNDO.

For downloaded, but not installed updates, check out and try some of the Deletions shown in this ----

If the update is downloaded and it gives you the option to install either by express or custom...choose the custom and it will give you a chance to opt out of the installation if you wish .
