How do I update my Windows XP?

July 2, 2010 at 23:04:36
Specs: Windows XP
I am trying to download AVG virus protection on to my old computer. It says that I am using an older version of Windows operating system, and that a newer version of Windows is required for the installation to continue. I have Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2002 Service Pack 1. I'm not very good with computers, so I was wondering if someone could tell me how am I supposed to upgrade it, and if it is free?

I have no personal experience with XP Media Centre other than having briefly played with an installation; thus my comments are not from personal experience. Possibly (highly likely) others with personal experience of it will chip in and advise too…

But meanwhile…

Dun a wee bit of a look-see re’ sp various for XP media centre… Seems that if you install the latest sp (sp = service pack) – in effect sp3 - then you “may” have some problems.. .

However (to avoid these…) M$ advise to first install sp2 and then sp-3 when dealing with XP Media Centre. Also t’would appear that installing sp2 updates (upgrades?) your initial version to a more recent one - aka “Lonestar”. That snippet is discussed in Paul Thurrot’s pages re’ XP – sp updates – viz: (and scroll down aways...)

You can download sp2 here and save it to the hard-drive; then install it from there; or burn to cd/dvd and install from that. Either way I’d save it to a cd/dvd, so you have it for future use (if needs-be).

sp3 is here; and again save/install etc. as above…

And one known possible problem - and fix…

And doubtless there may be others…
