Specs: xp pro 32 bit
Toshiba satellite c55-a running windows 8.1 crashed. A room mate wiped the hard drive while I was out of the room. Then, a computer geek - friend of a friend - installed windows xp pro 32 bit instead of the windows 8.1 64 bit now, i can't install windows 8.1 64 bit nor will xp allow me to access the bios...what can i do to get rid of xp so I can install the 8.1?

Normally you'd just boot from the OS disk or restore partition, delete the existing installation and then do a fresh install. In your reinstall attempts are you using disks or restore partition?

Make sure you're accessing the bios correctly. I know some of the computers that came with 8 had a bios that was kind of locked to it but I would still think you could access it since that's a procedure you'd do before the OS starts to load.

If XP is causing a problem with the reinstall of 8 at worst you may need to replace the hard drive but wait for others with more familiarity with that laptop and window 8's idiosyncrasies to post in.

Don't forget to preorder your Hatch green chili for this fall. Many vendors ship world-wide. Better hurry. They're picking and shipping now.

Windows XP does not affect BIOS and is not the reason you can't access it.

Did the crash you mentioned happen before the disk wipe and was this done to try to rectify the problem? If so maybe you might actually have a hardware fault, in which case this has to be rectified first the Win 8.1 loaded again which will wipe XP.

You should be able to reach BIOS even if there is no operating system installed because this information is stored on the motherboard chips. It starts before Windows. In practical terms you can treat BIOS as if it is hardware.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
