|Normally you'd just boot from the OS disk or restore partition, delete the existing installation and then do a fresh install. In your reinstall attempts are you using disks or restore partition?|
Make sure you're accessing the bios correctly. I know some of the computers that came with 8 had a bios that was kind of locked to it but I would still think you could access it since that's a procedure you'd do before the OS starts to load.
If XP is causing a problem with the reinstall of 8 at worst you may need to replace the hard drive but wait for others with more familiarity with that laptop and window 8's idiosyncrasies to post in.
