Windows XP automatically dials my modem to connect to the internet and downloads something. Is there anyway to stop windows XP from automatically connecting to the internet?

yep. go to start, settings, control panel, internet options.
choose the connections tab. highlight your default connection (you can repeat this with any other connections you may have) and choose the radio button "never dial a connection", then apply and ok.
and you are all set.
my other question for you, and you can email me directly, is what is it downloading. you may have some other settings that you need to change...

the settings are already checked with never dial connection. It doesn't say what it is downloading.

Same problem. machine seems oblivious to "Never dial a connection". If the machine is on it will keep trying to connect.
