As James says there is no DOS in XP.
Depending on the application you may be able run it from the XP command prompt interpreter.
If you create a shortcut to cmd.exe you can set various options on the shortcut such as ram settings that may also help you to get you app working
To access the command prompt interpreter:
Start/Run/Accessories/command prompt.
Have Fun!
