this is my 1st attempt at doing a full re-format/recovery

Provided your XP disk is a genuine full install disk there is no need to run any third party programs such as Wipe Drive. Insert the install disk in your cd/dvd, ensure that bios is set to boot first from the cd/dvd drive, boot your system and follow the on-screen prompts to format the hard drive and install the OS.

Note that you will lose everything on the hard drive due to formatting, if there are any critical data files on it you should back up to external media before commencing the new install.

Good luck.

To add to the above, if you have a SATA hard drive, there are several steps that will need to be taken to get XP to recognize the drive. The reason fo this is that XP was released in 2001 before SATA drives went manistream, therefore support isn't built into the OS.

Also, make sure you have all your hardware device drivers downloaded in advance. You'll need drivers for the motherboard chipset, video, audio, network, possibly more. There may be generic drivers included in XP, but they're 10 yrs old.

Why would you want Windows XP Home over the Pro version? It has less tools. Even home computers should have installed the Pro version back in the day.

The F8 key may be stuck due to dust, food, or animal hair. If it's a desktop keyboard, you can easily pop up the key and clean the junk out with a vacuum. Laptop keys require more care and have more pieces. Optionally, you can try a can of compressed air.
