My computer takes exactly 15min to start! It's driving me nuts. On the botton..on the task bar, I think they call it.. there are 17 icons! They all have to load...is that what is making this take so long? Can I safely do this? thanks!

You can do Start, then RUN, then type
msconfig
Then uncheck items in the Startup tab.
None are needed for computer operation.

To find out what each Startup(or Process) item
does or means, and any recommendation as to if you should close the process:

If those icons are on the left side of the taskbar they are simply shortcuts and shouldn't increase the startup time. You may have other issues. If they are in the center of the taskbar then they are running.

Also you could have harddrive problems ----
Possible that the harddrive is not running at its normal speed,
freezing up or slowing down. Or has quit.
My computer took 20 min. to boot the other day.
I was watching the HDD activity indicator light,
and it would remain on, and not rapidly blinking.
Mechanical devices do have problems.

Harddrive manufacturers have software for download for testing HDD.

Hi, and thanks for responding. I DID that misconfig this morning after I already read that on another posting. It looks like some foreign language in there! under the General Tag it has Normal, Diagnostic and Selective...I don't know what to do! I don't want to do a system restore on it. Once there was a thing from the Wizard and it said it puts all unused progams in a folder on the desktop. I did that.. and it worked great. NOW? a lot are all back because I backed it up a bit in December. I wish I could make that Wizard appear again! Does anyone know how to access it? Is it a Windows thing? or Toshiba? Thanks again! A

Chuck...that Answers that Work is great..I am going to do what you recommended...going to take a lot of reading..but at least it's all there in black and white and it tells you whether or not to delete the icon...thanks so much..to all of you!
