They reside in the C:\windows directory and show up as bitmap files. If you delete the files from the C:\windows directory they should no longer appear in the list.

The default location for desktop background images in Win9.x/Me/XP is C:\WINDOWS\WEB\WALLPAPER. Make your computer life easier by stashing yours in that folder. When you right-click on the desktop, choose 'Properties,' the list of images under the 'Background' tab are those located in that folder. Just navagate there in Windows Explorer to investigate what Windows has placed there & delete anything you don't like.

To use Windows Explorer Right click on Start then Left Click on Explore / then Left Click On the Windows Directory on the left side ( If you have user names in Windows when you sign in to ypur computer their might be more than one Windows Directory ) / Then Left Click on the + where you see "Web" then Left Click on Wallpaper / You should see the backgrounds on the Right side of your screen/ all you have to do then is Right Click on each one the you dont want then Left Click on Delete.
