Pop you xp cd in, as the setup starts it should ask if you want to upgrade, tell it no. then do a clean install.
I always like to format my self. Get a dos bootdisk for 98/me from http://bootdisk.com
now boot from your a: and run the format command on your c:once c: is completly formated and empty, pop you xp cd in and boot from your cd, the setup will begin to install XP for you.
Good luck.

i have win98 right now and i want to installing win wp but they keep asking me this :ntkrnlmp.exe. i don't know wat that meam so can some one help me out. please thank you

i can't agree with buzz. i formatted my hdd and booted from the cd and when it booted it said it can't install from dos. i used winnt.exe in the i386 folder and it loaded the files and on reboot into c: it said it can't find user permissions.

I agree with guru. I thought I'd get a nice clean start by formatting before installing my full OEM edition of WIn XP Pro. It's been a total nightmare and I may try installing on top of 98 because it still isn't working after about 12 hours of working and waiting (I did have a harware problem that extended my agony, but I wouldn't expect this to go quickly or easily). YOu can certainly make a boot disk from Win 98 and if it supports your CD drive and has smartdrv.exe on it, you can reformat your hard disk and try to install WIn XP. Setup.exe will not work and if you look long and hard you may find instructions on the MS site to use x:\i386\winnt.exe to install from the DOS prompt, but it's been a total nightmare for me. If you get the DOS part of the install to work at all, good luck with the Windows part. On my last install Win XP couldn't find advapi32.dll on the install disk. I found it no problem, but setup wasn't asking me where to look, so I had no choice but to tell it to skip it. Of course after taking me all the way through the install and set up process, when it rebooted the first thing it did was crash because it couldn't find that file.
Setup won't run in safe mode and the repair (restor?) feature didn't accept the administrator password I gave it an hour earlier.
So far, I've reformatted three or four times, done the DOS install Windows install at least three times. Once it died, once is described above and I am still working on the third try. It's looking good so far so wish me luck. I do not recommend this process to anyone.

To format
click start got to run.
type in CMD and press OK
This opens the DOS prompt
Type in format C:
press enter.
Then reboot with startup disk in floppy drive
