In my opinion, anyone who needs to ask this question will have very little use for linux, as using linux is much more complex than installing it.
Please let us know if you found someone's advice to be helpful.

Well use Partition magic for partitioning your HD, and then put Fedora or Red Hat installation CD and install it on the new partition.....let me know if u have any additional questions.

that depends on what flavor you use.linux has a few bootable live cds that all you need to do is reboot your pc,and select your cdrom as your first boot device, and pop the cd in your cdrom, and it auto configures your hardware. It takes a less then a few mins depending on your hardware speed.Yuo wont have to worry about all the viruses, spyware, trojans that windows is full of.Linux distros are known, and proven to be safer then windows. You can do a whole lot more with the knoppix live cd.you can buy one,or get a free one at this link as long as you have a burner, and a program to download iso to your cd.when your on the website you canscroll down to see all the bootable live cds they have.I use a few,but my favorite is knoppix.

This is reading material you need,

When all is said and done, I hope the girls can say they had fun..

Slax is good to but a much smaller download at under 200MB. It is a good idea, to try that or knoppix to see if you like it before you go and partition your hard drive and stuff. You need a root partition and a small swap partition, with a different file system than windows.
