i cant play .avi files. windows media player says one or more codecs are needed. where do i get them from? any help would be appreciated cheers

Download the Gspot Codec application. If you open the AVI file with it, you will receive detailed information about the codecs used to encode the video and audio data. You can then Google for the codecs and download them.
MiniApache - a simple, fast and free web server

Hi,
I've never played one of those before, but I looked in my Windows Media Player. Let's try this. Go to:
Start
All Programs
Accessories
Entertainment
Windows Media PlayerYou might have to expand the Windows Media Player window by double clicking on the blue border of the window.
Then go to Tools
THen select Options
Click on the File Types tabClick your mouse on the check box that says Windows Video File (.avi)
Once you see the check mark in the box, you should be set. Please keep me posted.

I changed my avi file association to Quick Time. NOTHING, and I do mean nothing I tried to get WMP to play avi's worked. MSKB articles were no help whatsoever.

MS decided to break certain avi codecs.
Advise install the avi codecs last.
Divx is working on things.http://www.vidomi.com/
ffdshow filter can rewrite things to, less in favor of MS.
Blue-Ray
Disk size does matter.

You're needing this file>
WM9Codecs
It's a MS file and you get it from the MP site or the Movie Maker site. It's a little over 800k. It does run with Media Player 10.I may be crazy, but I'm not stupid...
